Family Reunification Visa
Join your spouse or parents in Italy through family reunification. Work rights included, with a pathway to permanent residency and citizenship.
What is Family Reunification Visa?
Family Reunification (Ricongiungimento Familiare) allows eligible non-EU family members of Italian citizens or legal residents to move to Italy and obtain a residence permit. It's the pathway used by spouses, minor children, and certain dependent adult children to join their family and settle legally in the country.
Unlike most Italian visas, Family Reunification grants full work rights from day one. You can work for any employer, freelance, or open a business without needing an additional work permit.
The sponsor — your Italian citizen or legally resident family member — must demonstrate adequate income, suitable accommodation, and a genuine family relationship. Once approved, the reunited family member receives a residence permit and begins accruing years toward long-term residency and, if married to an Italian, eventual citizenship.
Requirements
Family Reunification rules vary by consulate and by the sponsor's immigration status. The process also involves Italian authorities issuing a Nulla Osta before the visa can be granted. Always confirm local requirements before applying.
Relationship Requirements
- Apostilled and translated marriage certificate (for spouses)
- Apostilled and translated birth certificates (for children)
- Proof of genuine, ongoing relationship (photos, messages, joint accounts, leases, etc.)
- Sponsor's valid Italian residence permit or Italian/EU citizenship
- Confirmation that the family relationship existed prior to application
Financial & Documentary Requirements
- Sponsor must meet income threshold: €8,500+ base (1× Assegno Sociale) + additional amounts for each dependent family member
- Proof of suitable accommodation meeting local housing standards
- Private health insurance (until registered in SSN)
- Valid passport (6+ months validity)
