Autonomo Visa

Build your business in Italy as a self-employed professional. The autonomo path allows you to work independently and serve Italian clients directly.

What Is the Autonomo Visa?

The Autonomo Visa (Visto per Lavoro Autonomo) is Italy's pathway for non-EU professionals who want to work for themselves, take on Italian clients, and build a business legally inside Italy. If your goal is to integrate into the Italian market instead of working remotely for foreign companies, this is the visa built for you.

Unlike the Digital Nomad Visa, the Autonomo visa allows you to work with Italian clients, issue Italian invoices, and operate as a freelancer, consultant, or self-employed professional inside the country. It's the closest Italy comes to a true entrepreneurial visa — but it's also one of the most complex to obtain.

This visa requires a detailed business plan, documented qualifications, financial viability, and—most importantly—a Nulla Osta (pre-authorization) from Italian authorities. Approval is competitive and limited by Italy's annual Decreto Flussi quotas, with priority given to high-value professions and shortage sectors.

If you're a consultant, designer, therapist, coach, engineer, developer, or any professional planning to work locally in Italy, this is your legal gateway.

Requirements

The Autonomo visa is one of Italy's most complex pathways. Requirements vary by consulate and by Italian prefecture, and quotas shift each year. Always verify with your consulate — and expect extra documents.
