Veni | Vidi | Vici Newsletter #1: Liguria Region Breakdown + Tips on Breaking State Tax Ties

Splashpage of the Newsletter

Liguria is the kind of place that doesn’t try to impress you—it just quietly is impressive.

When people ask where we’re moving, and I say Liguria, I usually get one of two reactions:

A dreamy smile followed by “Ahhh, the Italian Riviera,” or a confused, “Wait—where is that again?”

Liguria is that sliver of coast in northwest Italy between France and Tuscany—home to Cinque Terre, yes—but also to real towns where real Italians actually live. Places like Imperia, Albenga, Camogli, and Genoa where you can buy your produce at the market, walk to a seaside café, and see a doctor without getting a bill that needs its own spreadsheet.

In this first newsletter, I break down the city-by-city vibe check, the cost of living snapshot, the healthcare infrastructure, and why we ultimately chose Liguria as our future home base. Not because it’s trendy, but because it works.

You’ll also find one of the most important (and misunderstood) topics for future expats:

How to break up with the "sticky states" like California, New York or Virginia—and make it stick—before your move.

If you’re serious about retiring abroad and want the mix of romantic coastline, walkable cities, modern healthcare, and strategic value—you need to read this.

Want the whole roadmap?

If this newsletter hit home—if you’re staring at your own escape plan scribbled on a napkin or Googling “how to retire in Italy without going broke”—you’ll want to grab a copy of my book, Escape Plan: How to Move from the U.S. to Italy Without Losing Your Mind or Money. It’s the full toolkit: taxes, timing, visas, real estate, healthcare, mindset shifts, and what to do when your California mail won’t stop following you across the Atlantic. Think of it as the anti-fantasy guide to actually making the leap—written by someone doing it, not just dreaming about it.
